HanVoice announces the return of its award-winning exhibit at Nuit Blanche

September 22, 2023

HanVoice, a Canadian human rights charity, announces the return of its award-winning exhibit, "The People’s Museum of North Korea,” an official feature at Nuit Blanche. Working with North Korean refugees, HanVoice has recreated an immersive North Korean marketplace at Stackt Market. The exhibit offers powerful stories from North Korean millennials about daily life in North Korea’s markets.

“An entire generation of [North Korean] millennials have now grown up in the markets watching smuggled CDs of Titanic.”

“Once the North Korean people realized they could no longer rely on the government,” said Sean Chung, Executive Director of HanVoice. “They abandoned their state-controlled jobs and turned to private markets. From selling homecooked meals to running trade businesses, North Koreans became innovative and resourceful to survive, creating a shadow economy. An entire generation of millennials have now grown up in the markets watching smuggled CDs of Titanic.”

“I grew up in the markets,” said Chun-hyuk Kang, a prolific North Korean artist and rapper whose art is featured in the exhibit. “My family lived in a coal mining town, and I remember my family began baking bread and donuts in the markets to survive.” Kang will be painting a live mural during Nuit Blanche.

The museum raises money for HanVoice's historic resettlement program, which allows Canadians to privately sponsor and resettle North Korean refugees in Canada. This program offers North Korean families, who have bravely travelled over 5,000 kilometres to flee an oppressive dictatorship, a chance at a fresh start.

The exhibit will be open to the public from September 23 to October 22, with an exclusive launch party on September 22.

Operating hours are from 12 PM to 11 PM daily. Tickets to the museum are donation-based and are available at hanvoice.ca. For those outside Toronto, visit our website for behind-the-scenes content, artist interviews, and opportunities to donate.

HanVoice is a national charity in Canada focused on improved human rights in North Korea and Canada's engagement in the Korean Peninsula, through refugee resettlement, human rights education, and policy development.
